It's a real bummer if you ever reach a charging site to find it's completely ICEd. But how about when a charging station gets popular, and all the spots are taken by plug-ins? It's not a shame.. Rather, it's an opportunity for site managers and drivers to work together to maximize usage of a limited resource.

239 You know the old fire (or combustion) triangle? The concept that for something to burn, it requires a spark, fuel and oxygen? I think for a successful charge station installation, you have a similar set of requirements. You need good hardware, a good management policy, and a good group of drivers.

The Site and Hardware

Once a week, I charge at a certain public station. The site is a parking lot which is surrounded by many tech company offices, and the number of plug-ins in the lot probably exceeds the average by quite a bit.

BMW Motorrad E

The Motorrad E is an all-electric concept motorcycle from BMW. The 2-passenger scooter will have a range of 60 miles and will recharge on a household outlet in just 3 hours. The Motorrad E features cameras and LCD displays instead of standard rearview mirrors.

BMW i3

The i3 is BMW's first full scale production electric vehicle. It is a 5-door hatchback built on a carbon fiber body and alluminum chassis. The i3's 22 kWhr battery pack and 130kW electric motor give the vehicle approximately 80-100 miles per charge.

As I write this, at least two of Plug In America's co-founders have taken possession of their new Nissan Leaf electric cars, and three drive Tesla Roadsters. Other drivers are steering new Chevy Volt plug-in hybrids on the roads. More are being delivered every day. Is Plug In America's work done? Hardly. We need to accelerate the drive to electrification of transportation.

BMW MINI Scooter E

The MINI Scooter E is MINI's first electric scooter concept, with design cues from MINI's all electric MINI E. The MINI Scooter E, like most other electric scooters, doesn't use the standard SAE J1772 connector but rather plugs into a standard wall outlet. The scooter features smartphone integration with features like smartphone ignition and hands-free calling. The MINI Scooter E is powered by Li-Ion batteries connected to an electric motor that drives the rear wheel. At this time, BMW has no plans for production of the MINI Scooter E.

BMW MINI E

The MINI E is an OEM conversion of MINI 2-door hardtop to a 2-seat EV with AC150 drivetrain & battery from AC Propulsion. The MINI E has a 100mi range and top speed of 95 mph. It's 35 kWh Li-ion battery back uses 5000+ laptop style batteries and can be recharged in 2.5 hours from a home charger (240V, 50A), connected by an ODU conductive charging connector. The MINI E is powered by a 150kW electric motor with 220Nm torque and weighs in at 3230 lbs. BMW is conducting limited field trials in US, EU, and Asia.

BMW ActiveE

The 4-seater ActiveE coupe is BMW's first vehicle in their EfficientDynamics lineup. It is an all electric BMW 1-series coupe powered by a 125kW electric motor (170hp) with 250Nm of torque. The ActiveE will go 0-60 in approximately 8.5 seconds and has a 100mi range with liquid-cooled LiIon battery pack by BMW and LiMotive. The batteries can be via a J1772 connector at up to 32A, 240V (6.6kW). Like the BMW MINI E, the ActiveE will have regen braking in accelerator pedal. BMW has announced this will be a limited field trial vehicle, for lease in select areas only, beginning in Fall 2011.

BMW i8

Formerly the BMW EfficientDynamics Vision PHEV, the i8 is BMW's first plug-in sports car. The i8 is a newly-designed 2-door 4 seater PHEV, with the same electric drive system as the BMW i3 powering the front wheels, and a 1.5 L, 3-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels. Together, the two drive systems will bring the i8 to 60mph in less than 5 seconds, while achieving an estimated average of 94 mpg. For average driving, the i8 can travel up to 20 miles solely on electricity.
