The purpose of this survey is to allow Tesla Model S owners to share their experience with battery pack capacity and how it changes over time and distance driven. If you are a Model S owner, please contribute your experience to the survey by filling in the information below. You are welcome to enter data again as you increase your time and distance.

Before you start, you may want to collect several bits of information from your car.

  • Current odometer reading
  • VIN sequence number (see the VIN sticker or tap the Tesla logo at top of the touch screen)
  • Assembly date (VIN sticker, see photos below)
  • Firmware version (tap the Tesla logo at the top of the screen)
  • Battery pack part number (see instructions below)
  • Rated Miles/Km after a full Standard/Daily and/or Range/Trip mode charge (you'll need at least one of these numbers)
  • Energy and distance from longest-running trip meter

Measuring Battery Capacity

To get the most accurate reading of you battery capacity, you should read the "Rated Range" (not Projected Range or Ideal Range) from the charge state screen after unplugging and at least 10 minutes after the charge completed. The reason for this is because often the value shown immediately after charging has completed is inaccurate. In the 10 minutes following the end of a charge (or drive) the Model S takes additional measurements from the battery pack to calculate a more accurate estimate of the pack's stored energy. If it's not convenient to get the reading at the best possible time, enter whatever you can read from the closest time.

This portion of the VIN is required in order to properly identify vehicles and follow-up reports for the same vehicle. It will only be used internally for the survey and will not be disclosed in any reports.

To get the assembly date, open the driver's door, there is a sticker at the bottom right of the door opening. On the top left of that sticker is the build month and year, eg 09/12 for September, 2012. Estimate this if the manufacture date isn't shown on your VIN sticker, e.g., vehicles delivered in Norway.

If you're not sure of your wheel size, you can read it from the sidewalls of your tires. In the tire size it's the number after the R. So if your tire size is 245/45R19 you have 19" wheels and if you have 245/35R21 tires then your wheel size is 21".

To set the range display mode to Rated, tap on the Control button at the lower left corner of the touchscreen, then tap "Settings" at the top and then "Units and Formats". On that screen, you'll see the "Range Display" setting which should be set to "Rated", as shown below.

Notes: If you see a range of values, please enter the average or most common value. If you don't know a value, please leave it blank or wait until you've made a reading to submit. If you haven't done a full Range/Trip mode charge recently, next time you do, you can use the update form to add the Range/Trip mode number to your report. You will need to enter at least one of the range numbers to complete the survey.

Even if you prefer to use Ideal miles for your range display, please use Rated miles for the range questions below. We need everyone to use the same units so we can compare values. The image on the right shows how to set the range display mode to Rated for the survey.
