It Ain't Easy Being Green

Plug In America In the Driver's Seat - Mon, 04/16/2012 - 1:18pm
Thumbnail Image:  Short Description:  Being "green" is a great benefit of plug-in vehicles. But the label "green" causes lowered expectations and reflexive opposition, making the cars seem less desirable to people that are unfamiliar with them.

Plug-in electric vehicles are far better for the environment than gasoline vehicles, even on the current grid. They are not zero-impact--no car ever will be--but they are a major leap forward now, and will get even better as the grid improves (which is underway; coal use has gone from 52% to 44% just since 2007, and this trend is expected to continue) or as their owners choose cleaner electric sources. This is an enormous benefit.

Bob Lutz in Conversation with Plug In America

Thumbnail Image:  Short Description:  Bob Lutz addresses the political aspect of the Volt, and discusses the first year’s sales and marketing for the car.  He shares his vision of the future of plug in cars, and talks about the new extended range VIA Motors EREV, a full size pick up truck with the same technology used in the Volt.

It felt like a scene from Revenge of the Electric Car when I met Bob Lutz at the North American International Auto Show in January. I was in Detroit to preview the new electrified cars for Plug In America. After just seeing 3 screenings of Chris Paine’s documentary, I had images of Bob riding a rocket and doing everything necessary get the Volt into production. To me, Bob Lutz is larger than life. I grew up in Michigan and take pride in the automotive industry.

Plug In America In the Driver's Seat - Tue, 03/06/2012 - 6:41pm
Thumbnail Image:  Short Description:  Most people are wary of perceived plug-in vehicle disadvantages. But no sacrifice is required to drive a plug-in. If you want to see increased sales of plug-ins, please help us spread the word.

Fear of plugging in

Most people are afraid of plug-in vehicles. It’s not a knife-wielding-psycho kind of fear; it’s more of a broccoli-is-good-for-you kind of wary. They have heard that plug-ins are good for America’s economy, energy security and the environment; but they don’t want to endure the sacrifices that they assume come with them. So like taking the bus, they feel that plug-ins are a great idea for somebody else. They’d rather wait until everybody else is doing it.
